I have been to Pompeii many times over the years (my first visit was back in 1967!) but found this book a goldmine of information about the site. Rowland obviously knows her subject and loves Pompeii. She very successfully links the site to its immediate surroundings, not only the area of the Bay of Naples but the city of Naples itself (which most visitors to Pompeii tend to avoid), but you really cannot make sense of the site without an appreciation of its larger setting, and Naples herself, in all her gritty glory, is key to understanding Pompeii's history after its rediscovery. My only disappointment was the lack of a map of the city of Naples, highlighting the neighborhoods Rowland discusses, and a map of the larger area of the Bay of Naples might also have been useful, along with more details on the map of Pompeii that is included. But these are minor complaints. You may think you know about Pompeii, but you will learn much from this book.
