Who doesn't love books about haunted asylums?!? When I saw that Ambrose Ibsen had written one, I was very happy & I immediately bought it. It was great and I'm very excited to see there are two more in the series! He writes a great scary book and they are always original and quick reads, this one being no exception. A young English professor is walking to his class when he sees an accident; a student is hit right in front of him. He runs over to assist & right before the student dies, he asks the professor "Can you hear them?" He proceeds to die in his arms. This freaks him out, obviously, and when approached by a student asking him to volunteer as the faculty advisor for a paranormal research group, he agrees, thinking it could potentially take his mind off the incident. The group places an ad, quickly receiving a call from a DJ with a job for them. The DJ has been receiving calls each night at 2am, tracing the calls back to a no-longer-existing number from a closed asylum (rumoured to have been the site of a mass murder 28 years ago). The call has repeated daily for weeks. Upon request, the professor visits the DJ during his overnight shift at the station and gets this same call, at the end of which contains that same creepy question the dying student uttered immediately before his death. "Can you hear them?" The professor and his students decide to make a trip to the asylum to investigate further, resulting in a night full of terrifying incidents. Fast paced and fun book - ends with the group questioning whether they may have inadvertently released a previously contained evil entity into the world with the capacity and intention of creating havoc among the living.
