This is the second book I've read by this author. I have found both books to be informative, wildly entertaining and personally meaningful. I was looking forward to this book because his last book spoke to me in a powerful way and left me wondering, "What's next Bud?". For me, it really came at an interesting time, personally and professionally, in that, I feel we have all, to varying degrees, (myself included) become disconnected from ourselves, from each other, and certainly, from the elements. I am not surprised to find so many congruencies between Native American beliefs and the values and lessons expressed here in this book, as it pertains to connecting to all other life on the planet. This book shared some similar parallels with my experience with Daniel Quinn's, Ishmael, both with the creative use of Socratic Dialogue and with the content, in that, it seems we are being asked to thoughtfully examine not only our disconnect from the planet and it's elements-- but also- how we arrived, in a way, at appointing ourselves superior over all other life on the planet. I have recommended Megargee's books to clients of mine who seek assistance, in leading a more "authentic" life. As a mental health professional, I believe that most, if not all problems with stress, anxiety and depression could be better addressed with individuals moving toward connecting or reconnecting not only to "self" but to the elements, and all other life on this planet. In closing, the book has many worthwhile messages for a reader, it just depends on how willing you are to open yourself up. Well done!
